After reading the "Price for ID Now $35" in the March 9th issue of the Quad I was not satisfied with the administrations excuses for raising the cost of ID cards. It was stated in the article that the cost of replacing a NYS driver's license is $8. What the article failed to mention was that credit and debit cards which the administration has, perhaps more accurately, likened to the ID's are replaced for free and without worry about misuse of lost cards which are instantly deactivated when replaced. John Mark was quoted as saying that the buildings of concern are Horan and Overlook which interestingly enough have electronic swipe systems. This leaves me to wonder why old cards are not deactivated there by eliminating the concern that they might be used for illegal entry into buildings. In addition to the swipe system both of these buildings are staffed 24hrs a day with security personnel; if they are diligent in there jobs then they should serve as a fail safe to this system. Perhaps rather than passing the expense of a faulty system onto students the administration ought to work on fixing the system that our tuition and fees are already paying for. Finally a related point that might warrant some investigation if the use of "fake" ID's to allude the colleges draconian visitation policy. These unusual regulations prohibit legitimate access to the dorms, even to tuition paying MC students, late at night and early in the morning. Perhaps if students were offered the opportunity to access the buildings legally they would not need to be underhanded.
