Sophomore David Alvarado pushes for another win

Last year the Manhattan's Tennis Team won their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship title over Marist at the USTA Tennis Center in Flushing, NY, with a score of 4-1 which gave them automatic bid to the National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament. So what has the tennis team been up to this year and will last year's success be repeated?

The men's tennis team has been experiencing a winning streak since February 27th. They won their third consecutive match against St. Peter's on Sunday, 5-0. In singles, Manhattan only played five matches winning all five in two sets. Playing at number one for the Jaspers was Zoltan Bus. He beat Cprime Realista, 6-1, 6-2. Also, winning by the score of 6-1, 6-2 was David Diego and Diego Alvarado. The final winner was Filip Szymik who won 6-0, 6-1 at number five singles. With the triumph of this match the Jaspers improved their dual match record 6-2 and their MAAC record to 3-0.

On Friday, March 4th the team fell to Binghamton University with a score of 4-1. Unfortunately, sophomores Diego and David Alvarado did not finish their three set singles matches. After Friday's let down the team seemed to come with only one goal in mind and that was to win. The team remains undefeated in the MAAC, with a score of 3-0. Part of this success is owed to senior Erez Cohen who won both of his singles matches against Fuisal Mohammed at No.4 singles beating him in the two sets, 7-6, 6-3.

Other team members senior Alon Cohen and sophomore Zoltan Bus followed suit winning the No. 2 doubles match 8-0 followed by David Alvarado and Diego Alvarado winning the No. 3 doubles match 8-5. This gave the team a one point lead over Niagara entering the singles matches. Erez Cohen, Alon Cohen and freshman Filip Szymik won their singles matches. This earned them the three points needed to beat Niagara. Erez Cohen beat Niagara's Erick Garcia in two sets, 6-1, 7-6. Szymik beat Andrew Mayer 6-1, 7-6 at No. 6 and Alon Cohen beat Justin McConkey 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.

The team's overall record is now 7-3 and they continue to be undefeated in the MAAC, 3-0. So far so good. The team will be playing Florida Atlantic, Niagara, Fordham and Yale among others in the upcoming months. Hopefully their unwinding success leads them to victory once again.
