The Lady Jaspers will not take any games lightly. They anticipate that every team in the conference will give them a good fight. Coach Jen Fisher stated, "The preseason rankings mean nothing once you get into competition. We also have a very tough non-conference schedule, playing teams such as Hofstra, Seton Hall, and Florida Atlantic who all played in the NCAA tournament last season."
Fisher also stated that there may be some players who will carry the team. "My players who I feel will stand out this season include senior Jennifer McCracken, who was just awarded MAAC Player of the Week for her performance this past weekend at the George Washington Tournament. Also, sophomore Michelle Gutierrez and junior Kiera Fox." Overall every player who is a part of the Lady Jaspers softball squad will gel and equally contribute to their success.
The Manhattan College Softball Team does have a talented pitching staff. Fisher stated, "Junior Jillian Medea will head the pitching staff. She was awarded MAAC pitcher of the Week last week for her performance at the George Washington Tournament." It is not pleasant for hitters when she is on the mound. And she is not going away since there will be time for her on hill this season. Liz Pennino, Colleen Horgan, and the rest of the staff will give support to Jillian Medea and have time to shine on the hill.
Up to this point this season the Manhattan softball squad is now 3-2. The Lady Jaspers did lose the opening game to Army, 9-5. Manhattan College struck first posting a run in the top of the first with a base hit and a wild pitch. However, Army scored a run in the bottom of the first and opened up an 8-2 lead in the bottom of the third inning. In the top of the seventh the Lady Jaspers had a rally going but it was held down to three runs while they suffered the loss.
Manhattan College senior Jennifer McCracken was named the MAAC player of the week. She had an impressive .467 batting average which helped put the Lady Jaspers in second place in the GW Colonial Classic. She also helped Manhattan College to a 3-1 record. McCracken had three doubles, three RBI, and seven runs scored. She had three hits in each of the two games in the weekend of the GW Colonial Classic.
The Manhattan College Softball team will continue to perform well this season. With their commitment and motivation they may have what it will take to win the MAAC.
