New York is considered one of the largest cultural outlets in the world because of its large array of museums, concert venues, street fairs, and countless other events. The Asia society upheld New York's cultural reputation by sponsoring The 2005 International Asian Art Fair held at the Seventh Regiment Armory from April 1 through April 6. The fair sold the finest painting, sculptures, bronzes, and textiles from East and South East Asia, giving those who could afford it the opportunity to own a piece of history.

The International Asian Art Fair first began in the spring of 1996 with the intention of bringing together some of the world's finest Asian art dealers, and giving New Yorkers a chance to buy and view some beautiful pieces ranging from the ancient fourth century to the present day. Prices began at $1, 000 dollars and escalated to a staggering $500, 000, allowing only New York's wealthy elite to be able to afford such pieces. Nevertheless, it gave those art admirers and history buffs that are not multi-millionaires the opportunity to view and touch some priceless pieces weathered by history.

The fair had an eclectic collection of impressive and breathtaking art. The most impressive being the enormous ancient bronzed statues that one is used to admiring in a history book. Patrons could see the damage that history had done to the piece, and were left to wonder if the piece was caught in the middle of an epic battle or subjected to some devastating natural disaster. The mystery only adding to the value and beauty of the piece, leaving the viewer intrigued and amazed.
The fair was not limited to conventional and traditional art. The fair also exhibited displays of Costume Designer Tim Yip's magnificent costume pieces. Yip is the mastermind behind the stunning costumes in the acclaimed 2001 film, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The exhibit displayed some work from the film, as well as some of Yip's other impressive work. Yip's vibrant costumes exemplify his love for the past as well as the present.

The Asian Art Fair is an event that bridges the gap between antiquity and modernity in the art world. It appreciates both the ancient and the new, giving people a chance to see and experience both in one venue. It is just one example of New York's many opportunities to observe and see other cultures. In a city where there is some sort of event around every corner, a person's opportunities are endless.
