RIOTS IN FRENCH SUBURBS LEAVE AREAS IN RUIN
French police are preparing for more violent attacks. Recently, rioters have set fire to commuter trains and buses, as well as a school and a car dealership.

Secretary General of a police union Francis Massanet said, "It's a dramatic situation. It is very serious, and we fear that the events could even get worse."

Police officers and fire officials have had to fight off the rioters. "Four live bullets were fired. Two shots were fired at La Courneuve against police. One shot was fired at Noisy-le-Sec against fire crews and one shot was fired against a fire crew in Saint-Denis," Prefect Jean-Francois Cordet of Saint-Denis explained in a news conference.

A top government official later confirmed the report. The police detained 29 people during the riot.
France's Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin cancelled a trip to Canada in order to hold emergency meetings and quell the situation.

"Let's avoid stigmatizing areas…let's treat petty crime differently to major crime, let's fight all discrimination with firmness, and avoid confusing a disruptive minority with the vast majority of youngsters who want to integrate into society and succeed," he said, according to CNN.

EUROPE POSSIBLY THE SITE OF AL QAEDA CAPTURES
The European Commission will be investigating reports that the CIA has secret jails in Eastern Europe ready for al Qaeda members. Each of the 25 members of the European Union will be questioned, and then the EU will make a decision on their next move.

"As far as the treatment of prisoners is concerned ... it is clear that all 25 member states having signed up to European Convention on Human Rights, and to the International Convention Against Torture, are due to respect and fully implement the obligations deriving from those treaties," said EU spokesman on Justice, Freedom and Security Roscam Abbing, according to the Associated Press.

National security adviser Stephen Hadley said that President Bush demanded that the prisoners be treated respectfully.

"Some people say that the test of your principles is what you do when no one's looking," Hadley said, according to CNN. "The president has insisted that whether it is in the public or it is in private, the same principles will apply and the same principles will be respected."
