For nearly a decade the Manhattan Track and Field team has dominated the MAAC Conference. During this period they have won 9 straight indoor and outdoor MAAC Championships. Come February 17th there is no reason why they should not be celebrating a 10th straight indoor MAAC Championship.
This year's team is looking stronger than it has in recent years, which is saying a lot. This is so because in 2004 they won the IC4A championship which encompasses every division-1 school on the east coast from Maine to North Carolina. This year, with a team as good or better than the 2004 team, they are poised for a strong performance and another possible victory at the IC4A Championship.
Recently I had the opportunity to sit down with one of the members of the Track and Field team Joseph Cruz. Joe is a junior and runs the 55 and 110 meter high hurdles for the Jaspers. He is the defending MAAC Conference 110 meter high hurdle champion.
Quad: How is the season going so far?
Joseph Cruz: As a team we are looking very strong. Our distance team has been running well, the jumpers are putting in consistently impressive efforts, our throwers are outstanding as usual, and the sprint team is progressing nicely as well.
Quad: How is the season going for you personally?
JC: I am running pretty well but I have not yet satisfied my expectations. I have put in a lot of hard work in the preseason and the summer so I have very high expectations. Although I have won several meets this year I am still not satisfied with my season.
Quad: What do you expect of the Track and Field team for the MET and MAAC Championship meets.
JC: I have high expectations for both. The last two years we have won the Metropolitan Championships for the indoor and outdoor season so I am pretty confident about this year's meet. As for the MAAC Championship the last time we didn't win I was eleven years old. This year's team may be the best that I have been a member of.
Quad: How do you feel you will do personally at these meets?
