Rumors have circulated around campus regarding the cancellation of Manhattan Madness this year. Jaspers, however, should not worry, because the fun-filed event is still on the schedule.
According to Student Body President Paul Avvento, "Manhattan Madness was never cancelled; this is the same event that has been planned since August. We spent the whole summer planning it."
Elaina De Coteau, Activities Coordinator for Student Activities agreed with Avvento, saying, "it was never cancelled; the date was just pushed back."
While the concept of Manhattan Madness is still the same, due to scheduling conflicts the time of the event has been changed to November 1. In previous years, Manhattan Madness has taken place the night before the basketball teams were officially allowed to practice according to NCAA rules. This year that was not a feasible option for the coordinators of the event.
"A women's volleyball game was taking place on that day, so we couldn't have the event," said De Coteau. Avvento added, "All the different departments have been working together to fix scheduling problems."
This year, Manhattan Madness will be held on the day of the annual Green and White scrimmage game. The event, which consists of members of the men's team playing against each other, will give the students the chance not only to be introduced to the new players, but also to see them play.
"I'm really excited for it. It's the one day the students come out and celebrate the team. It's a good way for the students, especially freshmen, to meet the players," said senior basketball star Darren Johnson.
Manhattan Madness will kick off at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday November 1 and will last until about midnight. While planners of the event are aware that commuter students may have a hard time coming to the event, they are allowed to stay on campus. "As long as they can stay with a friend in the dorm and get the required guest pass, commuters will be able to participate in the event as well," said Avvento.
