This November, God's Love We Deliver will sponsor a four mile run/walk taking place in Central Park. Manhattan College has been a part of the organization for over eleven years. The group, which is part of a larger local organization, provides the shut-in and sick in the New York Metropolitan area with hot meals three times a week.
"The group originally began to provide homebound HIV/AIDS patients with nutritious meals," says Campus Ministry Graduate Assistant Jennifer Edwards.
Through funding and support from people across the region, the organization was able to expand its services to the terminally ill, including those living with cancer and Parkinson's disease.
At Manhattan College, the group provides seven individuals with meals every week. Last year the organization as a whole provided 3,900 people with over 725,000 meals.
"In the past we've had about ten volunteers," said Edwards. "For whatever reasons, people have not come out this year."
This year, the group currently has a total of four dedicated volunteers. The more volunteers there are the more people the group is able to help. "We are still in need of volunteers," says Edwards.
The group delivers meals every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday between 11:45 and 1:30. The Race to Deliver is a great opportunity if one wants to help but does not have time for weekly deliveries.
The Race to deliver will be held on November 19 in Central Park. The race is composed of various school, local, and professional teams throughout New York City and the surrounding area. Such teams include Mac Cosmetics, New York City Opera, NYU School of Medicine, and Manhattan College.
To join Manhattan's team there is a minimum donation of $25. Students can give more or solicit sponsors for the cause. All proceeds will go towards providing necessary materials such as food, transportation, and food preparation to keep this program going.
GLWD is a small and local non-profit organization that depends heavily on individual contributions (34%). Events like the Race to Deliver account for 13% of the organization's total funding.
"This is a great organization. When we deliver, they're so happy and thankful. They can't get out the house and sometimes we are the only people they see," said Edwards passionately. She continued, "We deliver more than food, but smiles too. However, without money and help from caring people, this organization would not exist."
