Recognizing scholastic excellence both within the Communications major and in cumulative academics, the Manhattan College/Mount Saint Vincent chapter was the fourth chapter nationwide. Since then, the society has grown to over 500 chapters around the country.
While the organization's National Charter only requires a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and a Communications GPA of 3.25, the College's Delta Chapter requires a minimum of a 3.25 in all classes. Of the 25 students inducted this year, 19 are Manhattan College students.
Faculty and administration from both schools, as well as family and friends of the inductees, were in attendance to usher in the newest class.
The ceremony was held in the Presidents Room in the Administration Building at Mount Saint Vincent, and marked the last induction where the two schools were actively joined in the cooperative program. Because of the looming split between the two schools, the end of the co-op Communications Department spells the end of the cooperative Delta Chapter of Lambda Pi Eta.
"It is very sad to be one of the last Manhattan College students to be inducted in to the chapter," explained Junior Beth Pozner.
While Manhattan Students realize that their time in this society has become finite, they have also expressed feelings of excitement and pride in their induction.
"It's a national honor society, so it means I'm a part of something big," explained Junior Brianne Ryan. "It's well-known throughout college campuses, across the U.S.," she continued.
Guest speakers at the ceremony were Manhattan graduate Michelle Yu, '01, and CMSV graduate Christopher Muggeo, '02. Both speakers are former members of Lambda Pi Eta.
Since her graduation, Yu has worked her way up the ranks of NY1 News, from reporter to anchor. She is also the author of, "China Dolls: The Novel." Muggeo finished his tenure at the Mount and moved on to Con Edison. He has held several high ranking positions in fields both related and unrelated to communications, and is now a Communications Specialists for the company.
Their stories of success were an inspiration to the current junior and senior inductees who plan on graduating within the next two years.
Students inducted into the society join a membership dedicated to community service in New York City with a specific focus on the Bronx. Some of their projects include gathering food for Christmas baskets to give to families in need, as well as winter hat and coat drives for children. They also make it a point to present a strong showing at annual fundraisers like the blood drives, Relay for Life and other charitable events held at both schools.
Professor Francis Broderick of the Communications Department is the faculty advisor of the honor society and was recently appointed to the National Advisory Council of Lambda Pi Eta.
