For senior Electrical Engineer Katherine Drain, the next semester has already started on a good note after winning a $3,000 award from the Association of Old Crows.
The AOC Award is an annual recognition of three New York resident students majoring in Electrical or Computer Engineering. AOC receives donations and involvement from electrical and computer industries every year. The winners of this academic scholarship must fill out an application, which includes writing two essays and a copy of their official college transcript. The scholarship is given out to the students based on their financial needs and academic achievements.
Drain was one of the two students who were nominated by Dr. Romeo Pasco for this award from Manhattan College. The two other winners this year were from Stony Brook University and Columbia University.
When asked why she thinks she won, Drain replied, "I think it's because I'm a female in the electrical field. Someone else was nominated from this school, and he was a guy." She continued, "The other two winners were Hispanic and African American, so I don't know if they were looking for minorities."
Before receiving the official letter declaring her as one of the winners, Drain was informed by Pasco.
"I was just talking to another professor, and he walked up to me and said 'Congratulations!'" she said.
Drain and the other two winners were invited to a banquet at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, New York on November 10 to officially receive their awards.
"It was really nice. The place itself was gorgeous. There was a cocktail hour and hors d'oeuvres," Drain said. "There was a live band. It was a dinner and dance party. There were also raffles given away for charities."
Richard Edelmann, the head of the Scholarship Committee for the AOC, handed each of the students the award at the beginning of the evening during the opening ceremonies.
"People came up to me to congratulate me and tell me that they voted for me throughout the night," said Drain. "It was also about networking because I got a few business cards."
