Manhattan College's new parking structure will affect not only the Manhattan College
community, but it will also affect the residents of the Bronx, Manhattan and southern
Westchester County. New York City is known globally for its high density and mixed-use projects, and Manhattan College is finally acting upon its vast obscene surface parking lot on Broadway.
The parking lot on Broadway is an eyesore to the community and resembles a parking
lot in the suburbs, not something commonly seen in one of New York City's five boroughs. The parking lot was not being used to its fullest capabilities, but finally the college has taken action.
The school will be constructing a mixed-use parking and retail structure on the site,
which means there will be parking with ground level retail space, which the school has
leased to Pathmark. Pathmark, which according to the company's website is one of the
nation's leading retailers located in the densely populated New York / New Jersey / Pennsylvania corridor, will be opening up a food store at the parking garage.
Manhattan College is finally making a major investment in the borough by bringing another major retailer to the Bronx, which in turn will create more jobs, increased tax revenue, increased foot traffic along Broadway, and, of course, give another place to students and faculty a place to shop.
The college is finally getting rid of its eyesore along a major route in the
Bronx. Broadway is filled with an array of residential and commercial spaces and
Manhattan College is finally increasing the commercial density of the community for the
better.
The school went above and beyond by becoming a landlord and attracting a national
retailer to campus. This is a good move for the college as well as the community. The
last Quadrangle issue reported that the college will be receiving rent from Pathmark
which in turn will help pay for the garage which will also help to not put the cost of
